You don't have to live next door to a fraternity house or sorority house to have annoying neighbors. We recently heard from Neighbor with Cooties, whose neighbors were shunning her. Now, Lisa and Stella tell us about their nearest, but not so dearest neighbors.
LISA: Neighbor with Cooties' letter reminds me of a neighbor I had some years ago. He and his family — his wife and two children, an older boy and a younger girl —rented the house next door.
Soon after they moved in, the wife and daughter moved out. He and his son, who was about 12 years old at the time, came to my house late one night. He asked me a bunch of questions about his wife. He was pumping me for information in front of his son, which I thought was inappropriate. I don't recall now exactly what he asked me, but I told him I didn't know anything about his wife or what she did or who visited her. It seemed like he thought she was cheating on him. He called me a liar.
I think he and his wife did eventually get a divorce. I recall a woman calling me about them. She may have been a court-appointed advocate for the children. I told her about the husband coming to my house to try to get information. I had the impression that she was glad to know. If I recall correctly, the wife thought her husband was abusive. Considering the way he acted toward me, that wouldn't surprise me.
STELLA: I'm 57, single and I've never married. I love men, but no man has ever asked me to marry him. The couples I have seen and met and been related to all seem to compete with their spouses to see who can top whom in sly insults or arguments. Once, when I stepped out my back door to pick up my newspaper, I heard one of my neighbors scream at her husband, "I'm going to divorce you!" just 3 feet across the gangway. It was 7:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Their windows were open, so although the nearest neighbors were sleeping, I'm sure they heard the declaration.
I wonder if I'm better off. I have two younger brothers, three nephews and a niece, who I love dearly. My time is my own, as is my three-bedroom apartment, which is located in my childhood neighborhood. Anyone in my family is welcome to stop by.
I never told that woman, "Hey, it's early on a Sunday and people are trying to sleep." But believe me, I wanted to badly.
