The Eternal Triangle

A man, his wife and his girlfriend.

Who's to blame when a husband cheats? Is it his fault? Or is it the fault of the hussy who threw herself at him when the poor guy was vulnerable and defenseless?

We recently heard from Jenny, who caught her husband, Daniel, cheating with Mia, a woman with whom he rode the commuter train. He admitted everything, they began counseling and she forgave him. They've moved on, but Mia hasn't. At least that's the story Jenny tells.

You seem to think there are other sides to this tale ...

GEORGE: It's the total naivete and willful blindness of women like Jenny that allow men like Daniel to get away with serial affairs.

Jenny wants desperately to believe that men are helpless suckers who have no control over their sexual urges, and that when a man goes astray, it's because some slutty tramp got her claws into him.

This kind of reasoning allows her to keep her marriage together. But it ignores the reality that her husband, the man who committed to her, who vowed to be faithful to her, is a lying cheat. Mia never promised anything to Jenny. Daniel did.

GEORGE: Sorry, Jenny. I don't care how slutty Mia is or how many men she's slept with. No woman leaves her husband for a commuter fling. There was a lot more going on between Mia and Daniel than he has admitted, more than you're willing to acknowledge.

HARLEY: Yeah, yeah, yeah, Jenny. It's all Mia's fault that your husband and several of his gossiping cronies cheated with the local easy piece. It's not your husband's fault at all!

Women like you make me shake my head. You're so self-righteous about Mia, but you're not even addressing the fact that your husband cheated on you! He probably has before and will again.

Mia has become a common enemy and a distraction. While you keep focusing on her, I'm willing to bet Daniel has started another affair.

KITTY: So, Jenny, how many more mortgage payments do you have left on the Brooklyn Bridge? Because I think you bought it a while ago.

MADELYN: It sounds like Daniel must have made a major commitment to Mia, to the point where she left her husband for him. This wasn't just a fling. I don't think this is the end of the story for Jenny, just the end of the first chapter.

PATTY: I wonder why Mia keeps contacting Jenny's husband. Has he encouraged her in any way? I'm only asking because it seems odd that, with a world of men available to Mia, and with many responding, she keeps obsessing on one that got away.

WHITEY: This is a cautionary tale for would-be cheaters. The person you cheat with isn't always easy to get rid of. I'm sure Jenny and Daniel have done a lot of work on their marriage. That being said, I do agree that it's a bit too soon for Jenny to be running toward home plate when it comes to her marriage. I wish them the best, but 15 years together isn't a strong indicator that it will last.
