Spoiler alert: This is a bad week. On my front, COVID. Ugh. I'm over it now, but it crushes you like the boulder that falls on Wile E. Coyote. I am now fine. Please folks, mask up, get vaccinated and get the booster. Yes, I did all three, but that breakthrough broke through. Mine lasted two weeks. The good news is taking those steps kept me from respirator involvement. That is the major issue. Grab those masks. Cover up your nose. Not doing that renders the mask useless. Sort of like a condom with a hole in it.
In the "harder they fall" list, add Rudy Giuliani. Living in New York under his reign as mayor, I saw the good and bad. The good: As mayor, he handled 9/11 with compassion, aplomb and much-needed leadership. The bad: He had some goofy ideas. Instead of hailing a cab, he wanted taxi drivers to pick up and drop off at a designated spot. The city already had that; it's called a bus. He wanted Asian grocery store owners to take classes on how to be more American. At one point, he considered holding back permits for those who did not take the "we all need to be like those backslapping folks in the USA" courses. Thankfully, that idea was dead on arrival. Then, putting his hand on his crotch during a Sacha Baron Cohen prank was not a good look. Or the time his dye job was left to dribble down his face. Next week may be his biggest slide. He is a guest on "The Masked Singer." Two of the judges were so stunned they walked off in protest. They eventually returned.
This week, Whoopi Goldberg, the head honcho host on "The View," made a comment that upset tons of viewers and caused the co-hosts, former co-hosts and critics to decry her statement. She said that the holocaust was not about the Jewish race but "man's inhumanity to man." Ana Navarro (Please hire her full time!) was the first to decry the statement. All the other co-hosts followed. Goldberg would not back down. In fact, she doubled down. ABC, the parent company of "The View," did what parents do: They put her on time out. She has to stay in her room for two weeks. She went on social media to apologize. She is still off. I bet the day she comes back, "The View's" ratings will soar.
Jeff Zucker, the head of CNN, has gone from kingmaker to court jester. A relationship with a former co-worker was revealed. He has been banished and tossed into the TV mote. It appears it was not so much about the relationship but that he did not come forward when Chris Cuomo was sent packing when it was revealed he came on to several women.
Zucker is an interesting guy. He went from "Today Show" producer to head of NBCUniversal in a few years. During that time, he twice battled colon cancer. A few years back, he had heart surgery. Through those illnesses, he only took off time for not much longer than a PSA runs.
In Katie Couric's memoir, she revealed a soap opera moment. The relationship between Zucker and his paramour was watercooler talk. At that time, Zucker moved his married lover into the apartment building he shared with his wife. I wish I had been in the elevator when the two women were pressing the down button.
Now I have an earworm. You know that song that will not stop singing in your ear? My tune is the theme from "Two and a half Men." "Men, Men, Men ... " What is it that drives men, who seem to have anything they could want —fame, money, power — to ruin their lives? As my mother used to say, "smart and smart and dumb and dumb." Be careful what you do. It always comes back.
