We all have those weeks when we look at our to-do lists and just want to cry. Wouldn't it feel amazing to just go back to bed and sleep through it all? Sure. Would it be a good idea for us to do that? Probably not. Obviously, it's completely normal to feel overwhelmed, but let's face it; we have to suck it up and dive in.
In a previous column, I wrote about how to cope when the pressure is on — doing yoga, meditating, being in nature and making lists to help when you have a million things to accomplish. Some of you added to that and told me ways that you've dealt with being overwhelmed. I want to share a few of my favorite additions with you:
—First of all, breathe. Just step back and literally take a breath of fresh air. If you have a pile of work on your desk in front of you, take a minute and walk away from it. You can then come back with a clear mind — and you'll be better able to concentrate.
—Get some physical and mental rest. I think a lot of people underestimate how much our health affects our daily behavior. If you're lacking sleep or you've been slacking on eating healthful meals, it can be a huge factor in feeling overwhelmed. Make sure you take care of yourself. Get plenty of sleep; fill up on water; and make sure your diet is full of vitamins.
—Set and prioritize goals. If you give yourself a goal, you're likelier to actually accomplish it. If you have multiple work assignments due the same day, make a list of what needs to be done and when each is due, and then knock them off one by one. If you wait until the last minute to do everything at once, you'll drive yourself crazy.
—Handle the situation. Put on some music; unplug from the Internet; tell people around you that you don't want to be disturbed. And then get to work. Once you start crossing things off your list, you'll gradually feel less and less overwhelmed, which will motivate you to keep going.
