Dressing Up Dad

Father's Day is the best time of year to celebrate dads everywhere and give them the gift of style. Bring the dad in your life up to speed on the newest wardrobe updates out there. And no, it doesn't have to mean buying him a romper for him to have a rompin' good time.

While the latest trend to hit the men's fashion scene may be the short one-piece jumpsuit, unless your Dad is a fashion rock star, you may need to just say no to this gift idea. Instead, here are some other ways to dress up his Father's Day.

—Start with color. This is an easy place to start when thinking about picking out something new for your dad to wear. Does he love to wear sport shirts? Board shorts? T-shirts? Or even if he's more the corporate type who wears a suit to work every day, there's always a place for more color.

This Father's Day season, the pastel ice cream hues are giving menswear a delicious taste of spring and summer. Soft sky blues, peachy corals, lemon yellows and mint greens are all new ways to brighten up Dad's wardrobe.

—Add a graphic print. Dad may already have a pink pair of shorts, but chances are you can find a unique T-shirt with a meaningful slogan or logo to inspire that special guy. And if your dad is a little older and appreciates the old-school genre of the "Hawaiian" shirt that was big on large-scale floral prints, then he'll like the newest "Cuban-style" versions in slimmer cuts, open collars and smaller botanical prints. Camouflage prints are another way to go. In stylized designs, they take the old favorite to a new level.

—Loosen up with fuller pants. If your dad is still into the skinny jeans scene, then getting him into a new pair of wider-leg pants will give him a whole new look and a little more room to breathe. The latest silhouettes are not slouchy, but slightly fuller and many are worn cuffed and cropped at the ankle. Whether it's a pair of jeans, chinos or trousers, these more relaxed styles can easily be dressed up or down with jackets, sport shirts and T-shirts.

—Ditto for suits. Menswear has been loosening up on the tailored side as well. Suit jackets are a little less structured with broader shoulders. The "slim" suit is much more relaxed overall. That's good news for many guys. Versatile mix and match pants and jackets provide many more options for casual occasions. But suiting up head-to-toe in gray and navy is still the classic way to pull off polished style fit for the boardroom. Buy a lighter charcoal gray or sky blue dress shirt and monochromatic tie for your dad to update his professional wardrobe.

—Let it rip. Distressed jeans are definitely for the guys who are young at heart. The rips and tears may not be for every dad, but the softer, faded, a little bit fuller, jeans may be perfect for men who love jeans and want a break from skin-tight denim. The bleach-splattered look is a big trendsetter this year, and if your dad's not the romper type, he may love this fashion craze instead.

—Get active or not. With athleisure still a big trend for both men and women, there are plenty of ways to treat dad to a little bit of vacation even if it's just chilling and grilling. Check out drawstring jogger pants, patterned swim trunks, faded sun-bleached sweaters, lightweight parkas and colorful hoodies. The soft suede or leather driving mocs are another way to let Dad slip right into the summer in style.... house shoes for the road!
