Do-Over Trends for the New Year

Let's face it: Most of us don't get rid of our clothes just because a new fashion season has arrived. Instead, we wear what we've bought from the past few years and mix in a few fresh looks. But this year, there are lots of fashion trends from 2013 that continue to pop up in stores and online.

Here are a few of my favorites: The timing is perfect ... you may even be able to catch a great sale on some of these items.

—Prints and more prints. Graphic prints are still making style news. Colorblocking is going to continue this spring, and of course, florals will bloom in the warmer months ahead. Mixing and matching designs like polka dots with stripes will still play a big role in the coming season.

—Metallics. That slinky copper sequined dress you wore on New Year's Eve will still be a big hit. The bronzes, golds and silvers shine in everything from ready-to-wear to stilettos and handbags. I predict that metallics will become a year-round staple in our wardrobe, much like animal prints have.

—Black and white. This classic combo never goes out of style. We wore it in houndstooth for fall and winter; for spring and summer, you'll see it in graphic designs that look fresh and modern. You can't go wrong with this all-time fashion favorite.

—The motorcycle jacket. It's another classic that revved up wardrobes this past fall. It will still be around for chilly spring days and nights. Just lighten up those layers underneath, and you'll be set. This is a great item to snag on sale. You'll wear it for years to come.

—Lace. We've seen it all-over in chic cocktail sheaths. We've seen it in T-shirts. Lace is another winner for all occasions — whether we wear it to gala balls or out to a casual dinner. Black lace is always a stunner, but colorful versions of the little lace dress are even more fun for spring and summer.

—Crop it. Ankle-length pants and short tops were all the rage in the fall. But when you put the boots away, you won't have to put the short stuff back in the closet in the months ahead. The "midi" calf length is still a stylish option in both dresses and pants. Just replace those boots with pointed flat shoes.

—Reboot. And speaking of boots, 2013 was the year of the thigh-high. But don't give up on the lean and mean trend you wore with all those skinny jeans and leggings. Boots — from shoe boots to the rocking western boot to the biker boot and the over-the-knee boot — will continue, even in lighter, summarized versions, so stock up now.

—Bold color. Most of us are adding some color into our wardrobes, finally. Emerald green was the color of 2013, and it promises to keep going strong. We may be tempted to think pink and purple in 2014, but whatever your favorite color, go for it. It just makes life more interesting.

(SET CAPTION) Black and white is a perennial fashion favorite. Here, Nicole Miller combines florals with stripes in a spring dress in her Nicole by Nicole Miller collection at JCPenney ($60 in stores and online in February). (END CAPTION)
