There are a lot of races on the ballot for municipalities throughout the county; so when Tuesday rolls around, if you haven't already voted in the municipal elections being held, take a few minutes to go cast your vote.

Elections are being held in Jacksonville as well as Holly Ridge, North Topsail Beach, Richlands, Surf City and Swansboro, and several other counties. Seats for city council members, aldermen, town commissioner and mayors are up for a vote, though there are unopposed races on the ballots in some locations.

Wednesday will bring relief for candidates, supporters and voters; more importantly, though, it will mean that the people have had their say.

When it comes to elections such as these, there are two types of people: folks who take a willing part in our representative government and people who leave all of that to others.

Don't be the latter.

Even if you think you know a bit about each of the races, you might want to take a look at the sample ballots to avoid the chance of being surprised in the voting booth.

Take some time to get acquainted with all the people that will vie for your vote on Tuesday.

Regardless, make sure you vote.

Participating in our government is one of our civic responsibilities — it is also a right and an honor.

Not everyone around the world has the ability to help shape his or her own government. In many other nations, those decisions are simply made for people.

And if you're one of the potential voters who leave it up to other people, you are giving up a quintessentially American right.

The candidates have worked hard to get their messages out.

Many civic groups have sponsored forums in the hope of spreading public awareness about the elections.

Now, it is up to you.

Make your plans to cast your vote. It won't take more than a few minutes, but it will guarantee that you play a part in your own government.

Go vote.
