Modern Victorians: a Shopping List

Don't faint. Your great-grandmother never dressed like this, but she might get a thrill from all the Victorian frills romancing the fall collections this year. It's time to rock those frocks. Period details are getting a modern twist just in time for the holiday season. Add one of these vintage-inspired trends to your shopping list.

—The high-neck blouse. It may have been all prim and proper in Granny's day, but the high-neck blouse with a stand-up lace or ruffled collar has been reinterpreted for modern wardrobes. Pair it with a sleek leather skirt or flowing wide-leg pants for a not-so-buttoned-up look.

—The lace sheath dress. Lace is making a very strong statement for day and night. The feminine textile is elegant in traditional black, and chic in bolder colors.

—The embroidered coat. This one is a statement piece that you'll have for years to come. Look for a jacket or coat with rich floral embroidery. In velvet or brocade, it's a stunner over everything you wear. Don't be afraid to wear this ornate piece with your favorite jeans.

—The printed maxi dress. Floor-length dresses swept the runways for fall and winter, and are floating into the season in all kinds of prints and patterns — some embellished with metallic designs. Think Victorian-vintage meets hippie-chic for a new vibe and accessorize with funky fedoras and suede high-heeled boots.

—Fur and feathers. It's all about decadent texture this fall and winter. So wrap yourself up in a little luxury: a chubby faux fur vest or a little black cocktail dress trimmed with feathers. Or add a clutch covered in patchwork fur or a pair of faux-fur-trimmed ankle boots. There are lots of ways to indulge in this elegant-yet-fun trend.

—Chandelier earrings. Long and dripping with fanciful gemstones, these earrings are the perfect way to give your wardrobe a touch of vintage style instantly. Wear them during the day for a dash of drama.

—The pendant necklace. Yes, chokers were a Victorian favorite, too, but the long necklace is making a comeback this year, often dangling with charms and jeweled tassels. These accessories work well with those long dresses and coats.

—The lace-up boot. Go, granny boots, go. The lace-up boot is a fashion favorite this fall in dressed-up suedes and velvets, but these boots also get a tough touch, too, when detailed with punkish hardware.

—Velvet slippers. Who doesn't love slipping into a soft, cozy pair of slippers? Whether they're loafer-style or mules, these are the go-to shoes for holiday parties, when standing for hours is a given!

—The fringe belt. You may be excited to go with the flow of all things Victorian, but there's got to be a way to cinch in all those billowy clothes, right? How about a fringed belt? Braided or beaded, it's the finishing touch.
