Lying is just a part of being a person. Developed in early childhood, lying is a skill so ubiquitous that the rare person who doesn't have it is ill-equipped for typical social discourse. Of course, there are a range of lies. On one end of the spectrum, there are lies that are expected, like responding to "How are you?" with a simple "Well, and you?" instead of featuring dozens of ills and worries.

The middle zone is home to lies we tell to save someone's feelings; condense a story; make life a little more convenient, private or palatable.
