Celebrity Valentines Go Big

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, the time is ripe for reviewing memorable gestures of love from the celebrity realm. After all, you may wish to adopt some of these to spring on your sweetie yourself.

For instance, there's the rent-a-major-sports-facility for your sweetheart gambit — guaranteed to be unforgettable. Just ask Selena Gomez, who was once treated to a romantic dinner and movie on a big — really big — screen by on-again, off-again beau Justin Bieber. That screen was the one at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, which he rented out for the occasion. And you may recall how Kanye West found a way to get Kim Kardashian to promise to marry him: He rented out San Francisco's AT&T Park for his proposal. Friends and family were there, along with a 50-person orchestra and a jumbo screen reading "PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!!!"

It's a poignant story now, even though their marriage ended years ago. But when it comes to romantic marriage proposals you've also got to give props to David Arquette. Reports say that while walking along an East Coast beach with his beloved, Arquette suddenly dropped to one knee and bellowed, "Courteney Cox, will you marry me?!" as fireworks blasted off of a barge that he had hired for the occasion. He had a Victorian ring at the ready, which made it perfect.

When Beyonce turned 23, Jay-Z proved that he was crazy in love by blowing a half million dollars on a lavish hip-hop party, complete with live mermaids and an ice sculpture that read "Beautiful B." He and Beyonce have been gifting each other grandly ever since, including the private jet she gave him one Father's Day and the $20 million private island off the coast of Florida with which he gifted her when she turned 29.

Interested in simple, classic elegance? How about pearls? You don't have to be a staid white-glove wearing kind of gal to wear them. They're very much a part of life for potty-mouthed rock matriarch Sharon Osbourne and hubby Ozzy, who buys them for her on Valentine's Day every year.

"Our first Valentine's Day together — we spent it apart — Ozzy was in Japan, and they're kind of famous for their pearls. He went into this shop and he spent a fortune that we didn't have in those days, on the credit card," Rate the Music quotes Sharon as saying.

"The day that he bought (the pearls) he left — brought them back to England. And then the bill came through three weeks later, and we couldn't return them 'cause they were (from) Japan and I'm like, 'Oh Ozzy, we're going to have to work for like six months to pay off this bill!' So, it's now become a tradition — pearls."

Jewelry says so much.

Just ask Jennifer Lopez. Even as salesSales continued on those the knock-offs of the famous Her one-time fiance Ben Affleck gave her a 6-carat, $1 million pink diamond ring in a supremely grand proposal complete with a room full of rose petals. People were still buying knock-offs of the ring when now-ex-husband Marc Anthony one-upped his predecessor, presenting the diva with an 8-carat diamond from Chopard. Wow, so how is her current guy following all that? For Christmas, "He gave me some jewelry, some beautiful bracelets. Vintage," Lopez told Ellen Degeneres on "The Ellen Degeneres Show" earlier this year. Then of course, Jennifer had to tell what she gave him: "I gave him a tuxedo, because I'm, you know, opening in Vegas and I was like, 'you can wear this on opening night so you look nice.'"

Um, OK. Not exactly up to standard, but considering how things turned out with Affleck and Anthony, maybe it's a good sign.
