Q: I own this old Philco table radio, and I have been trying to find out how much it is worth. It is their Model 37-60. I've had it for a very long time — so long that I've forgotten where I got it or how much I paid for it. It is in excellent condition, and it is a very beautiful shape. It is also very heavy.
Thank you so much.
A: The Philco Model 37-60 was made in 1937. There were at least 102,200 made. It is a 115-volt, 5-tube receiver. It receives AM radio and shortwave radio. Known as the cathedral-style model, it has an art-deco design, and the arched shape was inspired by Gothic cathedral architecture. This antique evokes a time when families gathered around their radios to listen to the latest news and entertainment.
Philco was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1892. By 1930, Philco had become one of the leading radio manufacturers in the world. After World War II, the company suffered loses and was eventually bought by Ford Motor Co. It is now owned by the Brazilian electronic company Itautec.
In 1937, the cost of your radio was $33.50. Today it can be found online in the $65 to $125 range depending on the condition.
Q: I have enclosed a photo of the logo that is on the pieces of a silver coffee set. The set has been in our family for generations. It includes a coffee pot, a cream pitcher and a sugar bowl with a lid. The coffee pot stands about 9 inches tall, and there is a finial on the coffee pot and sugar-bowl lid. The silver on every piece is in mint condition.
I plan to pass the set down to my daughter. Since no one in the family knows anything about its origin, age and value, I hope you can tell me about its history and its insurance value.
A: Your set was made by The Derby Silver Co. around 1890. It was founded in 1872 in Derby, Connecticut. Derby made silver, silver-plated and sterling silver hollowware, tableware and flatware. The words "QUADRUPLE PLATE" on the logo indicate your set is silver-plated rather than sterling silver. In 1898, The Derby Silver Co. merged with the International Silver Company.
Your coffee set should be insured for $125 to $150.
