2. In 1972, Richard Nixon signed the congressional resolution establishing Father's Day.

4. On June 14, 1777, a resolution was introduced in the Continental Congress proclaiming that there would be a flag of 13 stripes, alternate red and white; that the union would be 13 stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation. Therefore, June 14 was chosen as Flag Day.
5. Following the Civil War, many communities decorated the graves of both Confederate and Union soldiers. But the official Memorial Day, designated by an act of Congress, was first celebrated in Waterloo, New York, on May 5, 1866.
